We are delighted to welcome back our dear friend Ellen for another guest post. Ellen and her mom are absolute whizzes at re-purposing. Thanks for sharing your clever ideas with us, Ellen! – Abbie and Mrs. Brown As you may remember from our last guest post, we enjoy taking old things and giving them new life. My mom had an old pair of sweat pants that had holes in the knees. As she was messing around with her scissors and the pants, she discovered that the ankle makes a great doll skirt! So if you have a pair of old […] Read more »

Roasted Garlic
I use a lot of garlic when I cook. I could do nothing but saute garlic in butter and my family would come running to the kitchen in anticipation thanks to the amazing smell! Garlic is not only delicious, but it is also chock-full of health benefits, including cancer prevention and promoting heart health. Check out these fascinating scientific studies on garlic. Garlic is often an ingredient in savory dishes, but did you know you can eat garlic by itself? Eating it raw takes a pretty strong tongue (it has quite the bite!) Kale and Blackberry Salad
(Trim Healthy Mama – S)
Blackberries are coming into season here in Texas. We have wild dewberries, a small rather hard blackberry cousin, growing all over the farm. Soon our big blackberry patch down the hill will start fruiting. We sure are hoping for some good berries, but we need more rain for them to grow big and juicy like the blackberries that have started showing up in the grocery store. And yippee! Our local store has massive, plump, dribble-down-your chin blackberries on sale right now for only 87¢ a container. Needless to say I stocked up! I am currently eating according to the Trim […] Read more »
Homemade Laundry Detergent
A few years ago, in my continuing quest to keep household costs down, I decided to try making our own laundry detergent. I asked some of my frugal friends with large families what they do, and they pointed me to this recipe. I use it a little differently than is recommended in the original recipe, so I will share ours here. Taking photos for this tutorial was the first time Abbie made laundry soap. The only thing I did (besides teach her) was move a large pot of boiling water. Put your kids to work moms! <high five> What You’ll […] Read more »

For Kids Only – Make Your Mom Breakfast in Bed!
Since Mother’s Day is just two days away, we decided to share an idea for how to make the day start off great for your mom – breakfast in bed! Read the full instructions for our breakfast-in-bed recipe at Build A Menu If you are looking for very elaborate breakfasts-in-bed, I would probably be the wrong person to ask. I have made french toast, eggs (fried, I still haven’t worked out omelets yet), and pancakes, but I would be useless if you were trying to make quiche or “triple fluff bon appetit egg and cheese supreme soufflé” whatever that would be. If you can […] Read more »
