Fleece Tie Pillows

Fleece Tie Pillows

Making fleece tie pillows is a great project to do along with with your little brother or sister. You may need to do the measuring and some cutting, but if they can tie a knot, then away they’ll go! We think they make great gifts too!

Supplies

3/4 yard fleece
a 12″x12″ square pillow form
fabric scissors
measuring tape
pen or pencil

Instructions

Cut the fleece

Cut two 22″x22″ pieces of fleece. If you are using a different sized or shape pillow, just add 10″ to each direction of the pillow’s dimensions for your fleece measurement.

Cut off selvage

Remove the selvage before you start measuring

Be sure not to include the selvage in your cut piece. The selvage is the edge of the fabric that doesn’t look quite right.

Make a square with masking tape

measuring masking tape

Measure 5 inches from the edge several times on each side. You can mark the lines with a pencil and add masking tape later, or just use the masking tape along with your ruler to mark the measured line. Make the outside edge of the masking tape match the line you create with your ruler.

inch marks

Measure 1 inch increments on the tape using a pen and a ruler, and mark each one clearly.

cut out corners

Cut out all four corners by cutting from the edge of the fleece to the outside corners of the masking tape.

cutting strips

hooray!

Cut strips from the edge of the fleece to each dot on the masking tape. If your little brother does a victory cheer after all that cutting, just smile and cheer him on!

Tie knots in pairs of strips

Beginning at one corner, tie pairs of strips together (one from the top and one from the bottom). Don’t move your fabric around much or the strips will get jumbled together. You want to make sure you are tying them in order and don’t miss a strip.

Do this for three sides only, then stop.

 Put pillow in

Slide your pillow in the open side, then tie off the rest of the strips. Your pillow is finished!

We hope you’ll get the chance to do a project with someone small soon. Whether it is this project or a different one, you can make a difference in someone’s day by taking the time to work with them and teach them something new!

Have you ever made a fleece tie project? What did you make? Or have you worked with someone younger to help him or her learn something new? Share in the comments!
