The Mini Pizza Battle – comparing three crusts

We love pizza at our house. We sometimes make it from scratch, sometimes frozen (since we live too far out for pizza delivery), and sometimes we make miniature individual pizzas. We especially like minis for lunch. We have used many different bases for our mini pizzas, and thought it would be fun to taste test some of them next to each other. We didn’t expect a landslide victory but the verdict was unanimous! Read on…

The Competitors

We pitted three bread products against each other, fresh tortillas, pita bread and English muffins.

The Process

To keep it simple we just used sauce and cheese. But simple is a little hard for us, so we used three kinds of cheese: mozzarella, sharp cheddar, and parmesan.

ingredients

Abbie spread the sauce and sprinkled cheese as her whim led her (each pizza was a little different)

fixins

Then we put them on a cookie sheet on which we had spread a little coconut oil. The coconut oil helps the bottoms to crisp a bit and keeps the cheese from sticking.

readytocook

We baked them for 10 minutes at 375°

pizzas

Then we cut and the kids taste tested.

The Verdict

Each child was polled. Their comments and 1st choice…

Josh
tortilla – “It’s really good. It’s pretty much a quesadilla with a taste of pizza.”
pita – “It tastes like normal pizza, but it’s harder than pizza. It doesn’t flop too much.”
English muffin – “I think it’s good.”
WINNER – English muffin

Caeleb
English muffin – “Tastes good, but not as pizza-y as the others. It has almost a buttery flavor.”
tortilla – “You can’t really taste the crust much at all”
pita – “This is kind of tough”
WINNER – English muffin

Abbie
English muffin – “Easiest to taste the sauce”
pita – “This seems the most pizza-ish but is very soft bottomed
tortilla – “Good but doesn’t taste much like pizza”
WINNER: English muffin

So the English muffins won, which was not what the mom of the house predicted. From a cost perspective, the tortillas win, but from a taste perspective, the kids in our house vote English muffin!

I had a slice of the tortilla and the pita versions. Pita won that contest hands down. Apparently the kids like the English muffin version too much to leave any behind for Papa. 🙁

  2. We haven’t tried any of those versions, but we do have pizza and movie night every week. We do different kinds of pizza, store-bought dough, store-bought crust, homemade, frozen, but our favorite so far has been using naan as the crust. 🙂 I think it’s similar to the pita bread.
