Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day… and what could be a simpler bread recipe than Irish Soda Bread? This recipe has only 5 ingredients and no rising time. From start to a lovely loaf takes only one hour!
Ingredients
4 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups milk
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Directions
Preheat oven to 375°. Pour lemon juice into milk and stir.
Whisk flour, baking soda and salt together in a large bowl.
Make a well in the flour mixture and stir in the milk/lemon juice.
Dump the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about a minute, then form it into a soft ball.
Slightly flatten it (which we forgot to do in this picture) and lay it on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Cut an X in the top of the dough.
Bake for 40 minutes, or until golden and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Serve warm or cooled. We like to eat ours with homemade jam. Yum!

Thanks for this. I will try it with my 6 year old today.
Thanks for letting us know on our facebook page how it came out!
Maybe it’s just me but is the salt measurement tbsp or tsp? You listed both abbreviations for other ingredients (tsp and tbsp). The recipe only stats “t.” Thanks
Oops! So sorry about that! The salt is 1 1/2 teaspoons. Thanks for letting us know – I fixed it so it is consistent now. That’s what happens when I type too fast! — Patti (aka Mrs. Brown)
This looks delicious!
