It’s July and we’ve got red, white and blue on our minds. The Fourth of July is in just three days, and we have parties to plan for! How about some Red, White and Blue Nachos? We created a quick snack for our friends at Build A Menu that would work perfectly for an Independence Day celebration. Did you know that there are only three foods that are naturally blue? They are blue corn, blueberries and blue potatoes. And, well, sometimes they look sort of purple. But we are partial to those natural colorings, as you may remember, so even […] Read more »
Chocolate Dragonflies
Bugs. When they’re in your house they are a huge nuisance. Unless they are chocolate! We put together these chocolate dragonflies for our friends at Build A Menu. They are actually chocolate covered pretzels! We wanted to create a recipe that does not use hydrogenated-oil-filled candy melts. Our chocolate dragonflies do like to soften when the air is warm, so we serve them straight from the freezer. A fun summer afternoon snack! For the full recipe, check out our Chocolate Dragonflies at Build A Menu! Read more »
Silly Dilly Veggie Dip
Mrs. Brown: This dip is so fast to make, if you find out you are having visitors you can have the dip and a plate of fresh veggies ready in under 10 minutes! We created this recipe for our friends at Build A Menu. Josh did the mixing. Most of us thought it was perfect, Mr. Brown thought it was a little salty. If you don’t like much salt, it won’t hurt the dip if you cut the salt down! Abbie: I think it’s delicious! Josh: Great taste, and it’s sort of looks weird, and you don’t have to bake […] Read more »
Kids Love Green Smoothies!
Green Dinosaur Smoothie We love green smoothies. Yes, they look like green slime. But isn’t that part of the kid appeal? 🙂 For some. But at our house? At first I had to do some stealth green smoothie-ing. I concealed the green-ness of the smoothies in opaque cups with lids. Sneaky mama! After the children consumed the smoothies and ooh-ed and ahh-ed about how delicious they were, I had them look inside. Teehee! This was enough to convince the older two, but at the time our youngest was a toddler, so I had to come up with an […] Read more »
100% Whole Wheat Pancakes
MRS. BROWN: Whole wheat pancakes sound like such a good idea, don’t they? But how many times have you eaten a whole wheat pancake that felt like a brick in your stomach? Or like a dog’s rubber chew toy in your mouth? Eww! This recipe makes tender, delicious whole wheat pancakes every time. Just make sure you don’t over stir in step 3 and you’ll be crowned Pancake Princess after just one breakfast! ABBIE: I sort of messed these up when I first made them. They were way too thick. I’m pretty sure that I packed the flour into […] Read more »

Coloring Eggs With Natural Dyes – Brown Eggs vs White Eggs {an experiment}
We love family traditions. Everyone looks forward to our traditional Easter breakfast! Each year we serve homemade Crumb Cake (Grandma Brown’s recipe) and colored hard-boiled eggs. Some years we keep it simple and just buy food dye from the store to color our eggs. The table is lined with little cardboard boxes with holes, and cups with bright vinegary liquid. But other years we make the dyes ourselves. This year we decided to make our own dyes again. We thought we’d try a little experiment while we were at it, and dye both brown and white eggs. Some people dye […] Read more »
